The aftermath

July 5, 2018

Things are quiet right now on the east coast of Iowa and we
haven’t heard any fireworks since earlier this morning but last
night it sounded like a war zone. So many of the bangs rattled
the windows and shook the ground while our house was lit up on
all 4 sides.

Yes, it’s legal to set them off. As with anything involving our
fellow humans we saw some things that made us wonder how some
people can function while being so stupid. There were people
shooting off roman candles into trees, neighbors property, and
one even hit the side of a garage.

When we were young the 4th of July was a much quieter event.
The city did have fireworks by the river but all the residents
could do legally was light sparklers. A few gunshots could be
heard, once, and then the night was still again. The celebration
was more about getting together instead of who can make the
most noise until midnight.

The wife slept through the later, and very much local, display
of phosphorous projectiles being used to light up the night
sky. At least now things will be tapering off until around New
Year’s Eve and the critters can relax again.

We also noticed that some of the people who like to shoot of
all the fireworks aren’t at all concerned about cleaning up
the mess left behind. The debris on some streets is as high as
the curb.

Enjoy our Thursday as it’s the only we’ll get this week. Now I
need more coffee and to see what kind of food we have besides
pizza as there were no leftovers from last night to have for
breakfast.

Happy Mother’s Day

May 13, 2018

Got er done

May 11, 2018

Usually I’m a last minute shopper, you know the type. Christmas
Eve is early enough for Christmas shopping and the like. But
today I broke that habit and can proudly say I got the wife a
gift for Mother’s Day. And no, she’s not my mother but is the
mother of our youngest. Now I can get the lawn mowed tomorrow.

It’s like how I don’t celebrate birthdays anymore, instead I
celebrate the anniversary of the first time I was slapped. Got
so mad I yelled then didn’t speak to anyone for a few years.
Yeah, I can be that stubborn. But I digress.

Today I went to a place I sometimes go to when looking for a
gift for the wife and no, it wasn’t Auto Zone. I approached the
sales counter and before I could say anything the clerk said
“Aren’t you a little early?”.

I won’t divulge what I bought her as the wife occasionally
reads this blog. Pretty sure she’ll like it though and I know I
do as I got a good deal. Guess we’ll find out Sunday. If there
is no post on Mother’s Day, I bombed. It’s hard to put out a
post when I’m in the dog house.

And a hint for the guys, if you shop early the stores aren’t
as busy. All that said enjoy our Friday as that means we made
it through another week. Now I’m thinking more coffee and a few
cheeseburgers to charge my batteries depleted by the shopping.

Thoughts on New Years day

January 1, 2018

Well it’s the first day of a new year and people have been
asking about my resolution. My answer is simple, I don’t do
resolutions. I’m going to be the same opinionated, foul mouthed,
but lovable, person I was last year.

I’ve always believed the new year is book with 365 blank pages.
As the year goes on we fill the pages and at the end of the year
we hope it’s at least interesting. On this first day when I went
outside to feed the feral cats it was -17 degrees with a wind
chill of -40 degrees. It was about the same when I put feed out
for the birds.

Here on the east coast of Iowa we have been under a Wind Chill
Advisory since Thursday that is in effect until Tuesday morning.
The wife hates it even though I tell her it will cut down on
the bugs come summer.

And tonight we should get a real treat if the sky stays clear.
The first full moon of 2018 will also be a super moon. At 8:26
pm Central Time, the moon will be as close to the earth as it will
get all year. Last night when I started the car for the wife the
moon lit up the sky like God left a night light on for us.

So enjoy our first Monday in the new year as we won’t have
another like it until this time next year. Now, I’m a quart low
on coffee and know how to use the coffee maker.

Last dance

December 31, 2017

Since today is last day and last month of the year and soon
people will be celebrating a new year with a new dance, it felt
fitting to do this now.

The February edition of Motor Trend magazine arrived in the
mail yesterday and was set aside until a short while ago when
there was time to peruse it properly. You may notice the text at
the bottom of the picture which says “Supersized Subaru
3 rows 19 cupholders.

Naturally I assumed it referenced a 19 passenger SUV type
vehicle that looked like a station wagon on steroids. After a
quick read of article inside it was discovered the 2019 Subaru
Ascent would carry 7 or 8 passengers. Which made me wonder if it
had so many cupholders because it didn’t have any other options.

Turns out it will be the biggest vehicle Subaru ever made and
will be powered by a 2.4 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine
with a variable speed transmission about the size of a Toyota
Highlander, Ford Explorer, or Nissan Pathfinder. Prices will
start around $30,000 and the American version will be made in
Lafayette, Indiana.

It can tow 5,000 pounds, has Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, and
has a smart rearview mirror that gives the option of camera
views. It has power outlets, Wi-Fi, and 8 USB ports to reduce
the need for seat mounted DVD screens. The vehicle also has
ledges in the front for phones, Starlink for connectivity, Apple
Car Play, Android Auto, a Harman Kardon stereo, and the earlier
mentioned 19 cupholders.

All this leaves me with a couple questions. Do all those
features allow for any time to drive the thing? And; what in
the hell do 8 people need 19 cupholders for?

Enjoy our Sunday for tomorrow is a new day of a new month in
a new year.
