On April 11, 2017, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms
and Explosives (ATF) released its summary of firearms reported
lost and stolen from federal firearms licensesees (FFL)s. The
official title is “Calendar Year (CY) 2016 FFL Thefts/Loss
The report states a total of 18,394 firearms were reported
lost or stolen last year from FFLs. Of that 9,113 firearms were
reported lost and 9,281 were reported stolen.
The 9,281 stolen firearms were broken down into three
categories: larceny, burglary, and robbery. Those categories
break down as follows.
Larceny (1,423)- The unlawful taking or carrying away property
from the possessor or of another.
Burglary (7,488)- The unlawful entry of a structure to commit
a felony or theft.
Robbery (370)- Taking anything of value from the care,
custody, or control of a person by force or threat of force or
Georgia had the highest total of stolen and lost firearms with
1,593 followed by Florida with 1,260 and Texas with 1,247.
Since 2012 there has been an increase in the number of
robberies and burglaries and the number of firearms stolen.
Burglaries have increased by 48.01% and robberies by 175%.
As of March 2017 there were more than 136,000 FFLs in the U.S.
and its territories.
