Ever share a chicken?

Growing up we didn’t have a lot of money and often
would say that while we didn’t have toys we did
have a chicken and a stick. My one brother and
myself noticed the poverty because we were older.

Funny thing is when you only have a chicken and a
stick to play with, and you have to share, things
can get boring. As a team we tried to teach the
chicken to fetch the stick, but we must have gotten
a stubborn chicken.

Then we got the idea that if we killed the chicken
and cooked it over a fire with the stick at least
we’d had a full tummy. But after some thought we
decided against it. Our luck would be when we
cooked the chicken the stick would burn up in the
fire and we’d be left with feathers.

Looking back I have come to realize that it is all
in how you look at it. We didn’t have money but we
did have the morals we were taught and clean
clothes. Mom would always say “you have to wear
clean clothes in case you’re run over by a bus on
the way home. You wouldn’t want the doctor to see
you in dirty underwear”.

Yeah, it didn’t make sense to us either but we
wore clean clothes to keep from getting the lecture.
Some days it’s easy to sit on the pity pot and
whine about how bad we had it, but it could have
been worse.

Depending on who you ask, we turned out alright
anyway. So if you’re having a rough day just ask
yourself if have it as bad as the child in the
meme. It might put a smile on your face.
Comments are always welcome.

Like the way you put it. Reminds me of “Angela’s Ashes”, a book about poverty-stricken childhood in Ireland. Humorous and poignant.

After all boys will be boys and we will find ways to amuse ourselves. I love the chicken-stick story

we almost didn’t use it but it made us laugh so hard we had to.

    Grumpa Joe,
Mom always said we were a handful anyway. Glad you like it.
