Sounds like a circus

Rumors have been floating about
concerning the city budget, and
how far into the future it is
being projected. We have looked
into the matter and kicked our
own butts for not having paid
attention.

To summarize the 2013 budget:

the storm water fee will increase
by $.25 per ERU

garbage fee will increase by $.50
per small and medium bins, and
$1 for the large.

business license fee will raise by
about $25

building permits will go up by 25%

a new fire false alarm fee will be
$75 for the first 2 calls and $150
for every one after

police false alarm will be $75 for
the first 2 and $150 for all after

the sewer tax will go up by about
$2.34 a month for homeowners

and property taxes will raise about
$8 a month for the average home.

Bus fares, park fees, pool fees,
golf fees, and parking costs will
remain the same.

The 2014 budget mentioned an
additional $1.21 per month hike for
sewer fees

an additional $.50 per month increase
for garbage collection for all size
bins

and an additional $.25 per ERU for
the clean water fee.

These figures are from the city
website and we assume them to be
worse case scenarios, but commercial
takes and even bigger hit.

The City Council meeting is Wednesday,
January, 25, at 5:30 pm in City Hall.

Hrm, Not the best post unfortunately. Sorry to be so blunt! You should try some Norwegian carrot cake ( ) to cheer you up instead.

One of the Aldermen said that the reason for the 2 storm water increases is St. Ambrose. The Davenport Taxpayers paid for most of that parking lot project to stop the cars from floating in their parking lot. St Ambrose caused that problem by building one building and one parking lot after another without building any detention ponds for runoff, then came crying to the city to do something about it. Another interesting thing is that St. Ambrose doesn’t pay Davenport ANY taxes.

Davenport shouldn’t have paid to fix that problem for them. That repair should have been made by the School.

Part of the reason for the increase in property tax will be to replenish the general fund for the downtown now that we aren’t collecting from parking meters, and there is still huge outstanding balances on the parking ramps. It also seems like we don’t even charge for the ramps when we could be. Now when it snows and the city goes to clean up, the ramps are free. When the Davenport partership has an event, the ramps are free. Those are the exact times when we could get more for parking to pay down those loans instead of Davenporters footing all the bills.

It would also be interesting to see what we are currently subsidizing the bus system. Almost everyone rides free anymore just to keep the ridership total up. A few years ago on Jim Fisher it was said that it would be cheaper for taxpayers to pay for cab rides for the few people that use the bus compared to the subsidy that we are all paying for.

We were told by Malin that Rivers Edge would not cost taxpayers money. 2013 shows a deficit of $230,000. to be paid by taxpayers

Hold onto your wallets. Channel 6 is reporting that the Davenport School District is 4 million short on their budget, and they have the power to raise taxes to cover it just like Malin does for the city.

Last night I watched Barack deliver the state of the union address. The night before the City budget meeting. I couldn’t tell which one had the most lies and hot air. What Barack says and what he does is two different things you know kind of like the city.

  7. cruisin2 says:

One of the biggest reasons for the increase is the extra $6.75 million the city will have to pay towards pensions next year.
