Getting the box for digital TV

Now that the ribs are gone, we thought we’d do another post. With the
changeover coming to digital TV we broke down and bought 2 boxes. We
went to Best Buy because we figured they would have the better price
and selection. They only had one model, which sold for $59.99 with no
other choices. But the sales help was able to answer our questions and
we walked out with our 2 new boxes.

The reason we decided to do this now is because we have a TV in our
kitchen which I built a shelf for, and it’s reception has been terrible.
Every time we changed the channel we had to get out the stepstool to
adjust the antenna. I hooked the box up in about 5 minutes and then set
the antenna straight up. When we turned the box and TV on, we couldn’t
believe the differnce. We ended up with a total of 11 channels, and
they all came in crystal clear. The picture does seem a little darker,
but that’s something I’ll adjust later.

These boxes might be cheaper someplace else, but with the $40 coupons
from the government we thought we got a deal. We’ve spent that much on
antennas trying to get a better picture. Don’t throw all your antennas
out because you hook one into the back of the box. It’s only 4 or 5
wires to hook up, go through the menu onscreen to control the settings,
and you’re watching clearer TV. Oh, I haven’t had to move the antenna
once since I turned on the digital box. Comments on just about anything
are welcome.

The petting zoo concept, with an outside private provider was tried at Fejervary several years ago and failed. Does anyone recall what occurred at that time and what is different about the proposal coming before the City Council at this time?

    D-9,
Are you talking about in the early 1990s when Brooke privatized the zoo? It doesn’t look much different than this “new” proposal.

Another shooting Sunday on East 15th. Soon people will need to wear bullet proof vests to mow the yard.

The guy that went to Genesis was shot in the back.

It seems the city running it isn’t much better. I’d prefer to give someone outside a chance. If they can’t make it run, then close it down. We can use the money to fix the potholes. Some seem to care only about that.

Davenport Police will focus on seat belts because it is very dangerous to hit a City pothole when not wearing one. pretty hard to miss and dangerous to swerve aound one.

Wonder what costs our citizens more money: medical care for victims of violence, those who can not afford insurance. or people around town not wearing seatbelts. Anybody have those figures?

That new paint job on the railcar down by the Freighthouse is really something to see. Whomever picked out that aweful yellow color must be color blind. It should have been painted a historic color from the Rock Island Railroad. What it appears to be is some left over fire hydrant paint.

One compliment on the job: the lettering on the side does look nice and neat.

One final thing. With all those aldermen working Saturday, it’s a little hard to believe that nobody picked up the trash and building material debris on the side of the Freighthouse that the railcar is on. They must have forgot it was Davenport Cleansweep Day.

    anonymous,
It’s going on summer and seems like this year is going to turn SoLo into a shooting gallery again. We’re just glad that so far nobody’s been shot sitting their home watching TV.

    nitrous55,
The thing with having a petting zoo run by private parties is that they have a long history of failing. One failed in the early 1990s, and Brooke resurected the idea around 2004, and it also failed. I guess the thing that bugs us is this being again hailed as a plan to make the area a destination. Every time we hear that phrase from local politicians, we think money pit.

    D-10,
We don’t know the numbers, but 2 got shot and went to the hospital recently, and we haven’t heard about any non-seatbelt wearing people being rushed to the hospital. Our new car was a recent victim of potholes to the tune of $290. We were told up front that it was due to potholes, and we no more and got it out of the shop and fell into a humungous pothole.

    annymous,
We noticed that they used a bright yellow. Orange or red would have looked a whole lot better, but it is painted. A lot of people forgot about the cleansweep day. If they want a better turnout, they’re going to have to advertise more.

If the Aldermen really wanted to please QCI, instead of painting the rail car bright yellow, they could have just vinal sided it. :)

That boxcar is lacking a big SMILEY FACE !

They could have put purple polka-dots on it, and it would have looked just like Steve Ahrens BVD’s

    ;)

Anybody notice the squeekspeak inn the thin paper insert regarding a proposed rate increase from poverty stricken Warren Buffett and his MidAmerican Energy in the last utility bill. It’s a gas.
