Barrett-Jackson and a few shows

If you plan on going to the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, which started today and runs through the 20th, there are a few cars of interest on the block.

The Professor, Warren Johnson, has one of his 1987 Oldsmobile Firenza Pro-Stock cars in the auction. It’ll be complete with 500 cubic inch, 1,000-plus horsepower engine, backed by a Lenco. If you have deep pockets, driving this would feel like riding a bullet. The Professor will autograph the rear wing of the car, and be there for photos of himself, the car, and the new owner.

Also at Barrett-Jackson will be the first new Dodge Challenger, serial number 1. It will be sold on Saturday, January 19. It’s  a Hemi Orange Pearl car with the 6.1 Hemi engine. All the proceeds of this sale will benefit the notMYkid charity.

A 2009 Corvette ZR-1 will be sold the the same night. The proceeds of this sale will go to the United Way. It will be blue, and with over 600 horsepower, supposed the fastest Corvette ever built.

And finally, the first 2008 Shelby Mustang GT500 KR, with a superchanged 540 horsepower mill will be auctioned off. Proceeds of this sale will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This car will be a milestone for the fact it is the first GT500 KR in 40 years. If you’re drooling like I am, or you want more information go to-  www.barrett-jackson.com

Think you’ll be in Tulsa around January 18-20? If so you could take in Darryl Starbird’s 51st Annual National Championship Exotic Car Show. The highlight of the show will be the unveiling of Starbird’s latest creation dubbed ‘Duezybird’. Which Darryl himself is calling ‘a unique vehicle in the tradition of the famous Duesenberg.’ The show will feature over 400 cars, including the Voodoo Spider, the Predicta and many more famous customs. For more information go to his website at-

January 19-20, in Shaumburg, Ill., the 2008 World Drag Expo will be held. For information go to-  www.worlddragexpo.com

Don’t forget the indoor show at the QCCa Expo Center coming up January 25-27. We’ve noticed HyVee on East Kimberly is selling tickets. It’s a nice kickoff show with plenty of neat cars, bikes, and vendors.

Also January 25-27, in Chicago, the World of Wheels show is being held. Don’t know much about it, but for information go to-
www.autorama.com/casi/chicago.htm
In more automotive news, Porsche has announce their foray into the ultra luxary four-door coupe market. I never did understand the phrase ‘four-door coupe’. It will be the 2009 Porsche Panamera. It’s based on a 928-style front engine/rear transaxle drivetrain, and will be offered with a full-parallel-hybrid powertrain.

There’s some more car news, comments on any subject are welcome.

Those auctions are interesting to watch on the Speed Channel. A few weeks ago, they offered a wonderful old pickup truck that had wood on the rear panels, and the whole box was solid wood refinished and shining like a gymnasium floor. Gorgous piece of work.

We just watch to drool over the cars. Of course the prices some of these vehicles bring makes us wonder. Since we’ll never see it in person, we’ll be watching.

I went to the Dragexpo when it was in St. Charles, IL. It is nice, but is geared to the racer rather than the fan. I went to the Chicago World of Wheels the year the shuttle broke up. It is a real nice show. I recommend that you keep track where you parked your car and how you got from the car to the entrance. You can get lost in that parking garage real easy.
