Sore open thread

It’s that time of the week again where we get ready to start hurting. This Saturday, from 1 to 4 pm, the Guardain Angels will train at the Friendly House gym. That will be followed by demonstration patrols at 5, 7 and 11 pm. Meeting place will be announced. We have been going through our training manuals all week trying to learn everything we can to be Guardian Angels. I honestly didn’t think there was this much to it. As with other weekends since we got involved with this group, we will be busy. I will check in as often as possible, and if I have something to report, I will.

It also appears that red light cameras are going to be illegal in the state of Iowa. The state legislature will start working on this soon. The half million dollar restroom has been pared down $450,000.  Those are a few ideas, consider this an open thread and post your comments.

It was great to hear Alderman Meyers talk at the committee meetings about the proposed drug store at Locust and Brady.
The city is proposing that the developers move some of the houses instead of tearing them down, but that is really not the answer either. That happened on another development years ago, I think it was when the hospital expanded, and two houses were moved to 6th and Marquette, and 2 were moved onto Locust street, just east of Bridge Avenue. It took years to get someone to move into those properties, and the yards on a couple of them weren’t even being mowed.

It was also interesting to hear the comment from one of the neighbors of this proposed development how the neighborhood has deteriorated, and that 2 of the 7 houses to be demolished belong to Oak Helm Partners. Seems like whenever blighted neighborhoods are discussed, Oak Helm Partners has something to do with it.

Regarding the $60,000 that the taxpayers are going to have to pay for the bangers that set fire to the golf carts - I find it hard to understand why that money is going to be paid out of the Risk Management Fund, when by rights it should come out of the Golf Enterprise Fund. It’s a small percentage of Davenporter`s that golf and use golf carts, so it should be paid for by those who do.

Thanks for giving up your Friday Night and weekend Cruiser. Hopefully you had your cellphone checked before tonights patrol.

I think Alderman Meyer doesn’t like the city spending money if the city doesn’t have to. With this city council it doesn’t make him very popular. I personally don’t think they should take out 10 homes to put a new drug store, accross the street from a drug store.
As for the galf carts, the city is self-insured so we’d pay it anyway. What I can’t see is ; if there is that kinda money involved, why can’t they put up a garage? My cellphone has been triple checked by Verizon and they claim it won’t happen again. It had to do with an upgrade not being done.

Does anyone know if the Risk Management Fund is the same as the Employee Health Fund ? I believe it’s one it the same.

  6. Dokie-Okie Says:

No it is not the same fund.

Anything happen on patrol last night cruiser?

Possibly you might want to remind people about the no-sticker weeks comming up. My neighbor wasn’t aware of it when I told her about it.

We didn’t patrol last night because the Guardian Angel from Chicago got tied up. The patrols will start following training today. And thanks for reminding me, I’ll include the free yard waste pickup in my next post. Probably tomorrow, if I can still move.

With all the millions of dollars this city spends on all sorts of questionable things, why hasn’t the city ever purchased a better mic for alderman meyer to use? He has a little trouble knowing if it is on or not, and there are ones that have a red light right by the speaking port that light up when it is broadcasting. Also, the mike at the small podium that the citizens use needs to have a longer neck on it so people can adjust it to the right height. The current one is 1 or 2 feet too short to accomodate all sizes of speakers.

To Alderman Meyers: Thank you for asking at the committee of the whole meeting about the water problems near the future drug store project on Locust. It`s too bad that staff`s response to you doesn’t hold water. They said that they are requiring the developer to design a plan that fits into the 100 year stormwater plan. Those stormwater plans arn`t worth the paper they are designed on if public works fails to keep the storm drains cleared and in working order. I would like to call to your attention that the ice storm was about a month ago, and many streets have not been cleaned, and the storm drain tops are still plugged. This will be a problem at this new Drug store site also.

This storm drain and street problem affects alot of people in Davenport, as was that family that had $40,000 in damage to their property soaked in sewage. You can bet that most people that experience basement flooding hunt for a new place to live

On another topic, I was sorry to hear you say that those bangers that broke into your house used a stun gun on your dog, shabonnie. What a horrible thing to do to a defenseless animal.

  11. cruisin2 Says:

Alderman Meyer doesn’t deserve this in his own house. If these punks are found the police should be able to use a stun gun on them. Often.

  12. Keith Meyer Says:

Just to clarify….The stun gun incident was in the second month I was on the Council. It was really scarey to see. Shabonee spent three weeks on the couch stareing into space. I had to pull her through the door every day and pull her in again. I even tried putting a pot roast in the space. That didn’t help. One day a friend from out of town came who knew my dog. Shabonee was so happy to see her she shot through the door and life got a little easier
